AIND / Giant Steps

In 1992, the American Institute for Neuro-Integrative Development (AIND), was formed as a 501(c)(3) Connecticut not-for-profit corporation to develop Giant Steps CT School, and to support other education, medical research, and advocacy efforts to enhance the lives of individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), developmental disabilities, and related neurological impairments.

After 27 successful years, Giant Steps CT will be closing its doors effective June 30, 2020.

The insurmountable circumstances brought on by COVID-19 forced us to make the devastating decision we agonized over for many weeks. After seeking the advice of numerous experts, we faced the unfortunate task of determining that nothing could be done to prevent the shuttering of our school as we know it. We understand that this news shocked the community, and can only offer that if there was a safe and viable alternative, it would have been chosen. The Board and the administration modeled numerous scenarios, but none of these plans met the strict standards the Board has operated under for nearly thirty years. Protecting the health and safety of our students and their families as well as our dedicated staff was — as always — at the center of this heartbreaking choice.

In almost three decades, something unique and special was cultivated that transcended education: the school’s community was truly a family. That loss feels and is tangible, palpable, raw, and enormous. Let our many cherished memories be the light that guides our efforts.
